"How to Find an Agent - and NOT Get Scammed"
Presented by the Passionate Ink chapter of RWA

This is an intermediate/advanced 2-week course. Finding an agent can be a time-consuming, agonizing process which can be all the more devastating if you’re scammed out of money by a fraudulent “agent.” As an author who’s been both scammed badly and signed by a legitimate agent, I have firsthand knowledge of both and can relate to authors who are attempting to land an agent. Week 1 will focus on mistakes writers make that can result in being the victim of a scam, and week 2 will present positive steps for finding a legitimate agent. Included will be details of my personal journey of heartbreak and elation.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

September 26 - October 2, 2011
"Show vs Tell - How to Convey Emotion Thru Description"
Presented by Savvy Authors

This is a 1-week beginner course on show vs tell and the power of description. Characterization may be the heart of a story, but you can’t have a character existing in a vacuum. There has to be a world in which the character lives, and it has to not only be a believable world (whether historical, contemporary, or futuristic) but it has to be well-written. The technical aspects of a book are just as important as characterization and plot, and good technical writing is more than just correct grammar and punctuation. Correctly used, description can convey emotion as well as paint pictures. Poorly written description, on the other hand, can sink a manuscript. Topics will include:

  • An explanation of show vs tell
  • How to convey emotion thru description
  • How to avoid the biggest description mistakes

November 7 - 20, 2011
"Characterization & POV - The Heart & Eyes of a Story"

Presented by the From the Heart Romance Writers chapter of RWA

This is a beginner/intermediate 2-week course. Week 1 will focus on characterization, and week 2 on point of view, as well as the connection between the two. Characterization is the single most important element in a story. Readers will remember an extraordinary character long after they’ll remember details of the plot. As for point of view, it’s been my experience that POV is the element of writing that beginners have the most problems with. There’s a very strong relationship between the two elements, and this workshop will not only give pointers on the separate elements, but show the writer how to convey characterization through correct use of POV. Topics include:

  • 5 Ways to Create Unforgettable Characters
  • How to Build External & Internal Conflicts
  • The different types of Point of View
  • POV as a Tool for Characterization
  • How to Avoid the 5 Biggest POV Pitfalls
